KATHY JAFFE CHALLENGE

Hosted by IAC Chapter 52, the Kathy Jaffe Challenge took place on August12  through 15, 2021. The contest was returning after a two year hiatus and in a new location - Ocean County Airport (KMJX).

"Congrats IAC52 on a great, well run contest. All categories flew 3 flights," Mike Cilberti said. "The Kathy Jaffe Challenge ran very smoothly thanks to Ron Mann and John Fellzner plus many more volunteers...Special thanks to Jim Wells for Chief Judging the whole event despite the ridiculously hot temps. Everyone contributed and kept things going. I’m pretty sure a record amount of water and Powerade were consumed.

Regardless of the hot temperatures, the contest saw 23 pilots fly three flights each. Sportsman pilot Stephen Coleman improved from his previous two contests to capture first place flying his Pitts S-1C. The next three finishers battled it out flying significantly different types of aircraft from each other; Greg Stringer in a Bucker Jungmann, Ron Smith in an ACA Decathlon and James (Jim) Spaller in a Pitts S-2B. Points spread was incredibly tight with over all scores of; Greg 80.78%, Ron 80.50% and Jim 80.28%.

The Intermediate category was also a nail biter be first and second place. Wayne Asplundh came out on top with 76.12% and Glen Becker won the second spot with 76.08%. In the Advanced category, David Taylor repeated his winning style with an over all score of 70.08% over second place Angelo Cillartoto (68.08%) and third place Ron Mann (62.64%).

JAMES K POLK OPEN INVITATIONAL

From Contest Director Adam Cope, " In a nut shell, the James K Polk Open Invitational of Champions was a grass roots showcase and I couldn't wait to share.

Primary, Sportsman, Intermediate, and Advanced were all won in 4-cylinder aircraft. We would have had two 4-bangers in Unlimited but weather kept two of the 3 competitors from coming so no Unlimited flown.

We had practice Friday and only one hot as heck flyable Saturday (August contest). Sunday was poopy so we hung out and took some really cool pictures of the most Pitts filled contest since the 70s. (Total of 11 Pitts!!!!)
  • 22 Pilots flying 21 airplanes.
  • 10 aircraft with 180 HP or less
  • Five 200HP aircraft
  • 6 six-bangers one of which was a De Havilland DHC-1 Super Chipmunk.
  • Advanced 1st and 2nd were 4 bangers (Giles G-200 and Laser 200)
  • Intermediate was won by a 160hp Decathlon, 3rd was a 4 banger (Pitts S-1S)
  • Sportsman 1st Super Decathlon, 2nd 180hp Pitts, 3rd 180hp Pitts
  • Primary was basically a tie between a 115hp Citabria and 200hp Skybolt.
  • Grass roots is alive and well!!!!!!!

GREEN MOUNTAIN AEROBATIC CONTEST (GMAC)

This annual contest was held at Hartness State Airport (KVSF) in Springfield, VT, July 16-18, 2021.  Some weather to contend with, however in the end 24 pilots were able to get in at least one flight and Intermediate and Advanced pilots were able to get in two flights.

In Sportsman it was the battle of the Eagle and five Pitts. Greg Dinning in his Christen Eagle II came out on top with only two other contests under his belt in 2019. With only one contest to his name in 2020, James Spaller wasn't far behind and clinched second place. Martin Hill, also new to the sport with his first contest earlier in the year at the 2021 Snowbird Classic, also flew strong to finish in third.

Wes Liu always a strong contender and the second place finisher in the 2019 Regional Series for the Northeast Intermediate category held on to first place in his Pitts S-2A against Neville Hogan and John Shavinsky in their Extra 300Ls. Congratulations to John on placing first in the his first contest since he moved up from the Sportsman category!

In the Advanced category David Taylor, flying his Giles G-200, won first place in all three flights. Meanwhile Paul Russo in his Lazer 230 and Eric Anderson in his Pitts S-1S battled it out for second with Paul barely nudging Eric into third place with an over all  score of 69.72% to 69.35%.
