OHIO AEROBATIC OPEN

September 15, 2021

Contest Director Thank You to all involved with the Ohio Aerobatic Open:

I wanted take a moment to share success we with the Ohio Aerobatic Open at Bellefontaine, OH. After a few competitors ended up stuck due to weather at their home airports, we managed to fly 18 competitors with all 5 categories being flown for a total of 54 judged flights over Friday and Saturday!
Overall, the contest turned out great with excellent weather and a lot of good food! Many of the competitors/volunteers traveled sizable distances (Marquette, MI and Albany, GA being the longest distances travelled) and many indicated they would love to come back! We set out to really create a welcoming tone to build comradery and celebrate our love for the sport, and I personally think we were successful in doing so.
Thank you again to all those who helped make this contest a success! A lot of work goes into planning and supporting an event like this and so many of you went above and beyond. I want to especially thank Seth Bertram, Lorrie Brown Penner, Gordon Penner and Chris Keegan for planning this contest, all the judges, volunteers, Michigan IAC 88 members (even from the UP), and all the competitors and their families that came from all over to compete and volunteer to make this such a fun event. Certainly want to thank Hangar 145 for taking such awesome pictures this weekend and sharing the passion! And want to thank MT Propeller, Softie Parachutes, Midwest Corporate Air and Steve Buchenroth for sponsoring the contest and all those that donated time, money, and resources to make it a success! Can’t wait to see you all (and more!) next year!!
I hope everyone has the opportunity to get some more flying in before the weather starts to turn, and please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or are looking for assistance getting plugged in!
     Take care, Bennett C. Petersen

YOOPER LOOPER

September 6, 2021

Yooper Looper Wrap up, by Roger Bentlage, IAC 134 president and Contest Director

All,
Thank you for the support and participation in the first Yooper Looper.  We plan to have many more.
Special thanks to Lorrie, Wayne & Laura, Sandy, and Ed who drove up to volunteer and train.  Without them it couldn't have been a success.
Tower and airport staff, you made it happen.  Airport staff, the box marker placement, correcting the wind-blown, and picking up after was a huge help.  Tower personnel, your involvement in the planning, innovative suggestions, and flawless involvement during the contest created a safe, smooth event commented on by all that were involved.
Boreal, our FBO, amazing support from pre contest planning and prep through contest completion, not to mention the constant flow of food.  Thank you!

GILES HENDERSON MEMORIAL CHALLENGE

From the IAC chapter 61 website: https://chapters.eaa.org/iac61/slo-contest

A comparatively large number of pilots (28) either pre-registered or indicated they were going to attend the contest this year.  Unfortunately, many of them were unable to attend due to COVID, mechanical difficulties, or weather.  We had excellent weather on Thursday and Friday when competitors arrived and practiced in the box.  Saturday had rain and mist throughout ,much of the day and we were only able to complete the Advanced and Unlimited Known flights.  On Sunday, the forecast was much better, but the actual weather took longer than expected to improve to competition/waiver minimums and we were only able to complete the Sportsman and Intermediate Known flights.  There were no Primary category pilots this year.  In spite of the weather, those that attended enjoyed friendship, a banquet, and a single flight contest with excellent weather to begin the journey home.

All the scores can be found online here: https://iaccdb.iac.org/contests/746

MICHIGAN AEROBATIC OPEN

July 14, 2021

The Michigan Aerobatic Open kicked off the season for the MidAmeria Region. Considering the summer thunderstorms moving through the area and adjacent states, the contest was lucky to have a beautiful day on the Saturday, July 10, of the contest to get in two flights for everyone. (A couple did have to break off early and hightail it home before they got locked out.)

A big thanks goes out to Contest Director Dan Unger and his wife Mary for all their hard work and dedication to not only organizing but preventing the contest from cancellation. There were some airport use issues to over come, but Dan persisted with the help and support of Valley Aero Club members who are based at the James Clements Municipal Airport, Bay City where the contest was held. Special thanks to Mary for coming through as chef for the delicious barbequed steaks and fixin's for the award banquet when the catering fell through. Mary - everything was delicious!!

There were four first-time competitors at this contest including Julia Harrington who placed first in Primary with an overall score of  87.93%. She was also awarded the Grass Roots medallion and the Highest Scoring Decathlon medal. Julia just purchased her Decathlon in March, but she's been involved in aerobatics ever since she saw Patty Wagstaff perform in 1999.   See Julia's Pilot Profile: PDF iconJulia Harrington pilot profile.pdf

(photo right; Hugo Ritzenthaler, VP IAC88 with Julia Harrington and two other first-time competitors 2nd and 3rd place finishers in Sportsman; Tim Poe and Timothy Taylor.)

First place winner in the Sportsman category was Michael Hoy, flying his Monosport 360. So far this year Mike has been flying in the South Central region and is currently sitting in tentative second place in Sportsman for that region. He just needs one more contest there to qualify for the So. Central Region.

Normally found in the Southeast Region, Jerry Esquenazi flew his Extra 300S up from Georgia to win both the Known and Freestyle flights to secure first place in the category.

It was a pleasure to see Mitchell Wild back in the Wild's Extra 300S since he joined the AirForce in 2016. Mitch qualified for the 2016 U.S. Advanced Aerobatic Team at the 2015 U.S. Nationals. He finished in first place in the Advanced category with a score of 87.21%.
