The IAC Known Sequence Committee, consisting a highly experienced pilots in a wide range of aircraft, have issued their recommendaitons to the Board of Directors for the 2018 Known compulsory sequences that will be used in both power and glider categories next season. The U.S. National Aerobatic Championships came to a formal close on Friday evening, September 29th, with ceremonies held at the EAA Aviation Museum's Founder's Wing in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The 2017 U.S. National Aerobatic Champion is Rob Holland. Rob flew his MXS-RH to victory shortly after returning from the FAI World Aerobatic Championships in South Africa earlier this month. He also won the Four Minute Freestyle event which is a separate trophy contest at the end of the Nationals. Rob was presented the Mike Murphy Cup as National Champion. Yesterday was the beginning of the 2017 U.S. National Aerobatic Championships in Oshkosh, Wisconsin with Opening Ceremonies at the EAA Aviation Museum and the first flights in the afternoon of the Advanced category. Altogether, 89 pilots are registered and flying in the event with the largest category being Advanced Power with 25 pilots. Selection of a U.S. Advanced Aerobatic Team is underway this week with 8 pilots to be selected to compete in the World Championships in that category next summer in Romania.

Congratulations to our own Rob Holland for his 4th consecutive win of the Four Minute Freestyle. Rob brings home a Gold Medal and two Silvers for his excellent performance in Malelane. No pilot has ever won the Four Minute (also known as Programme 5 in CIVA rules) that many times in WAC history. There is a short video of him on Facebook now where he says, “The Nationals are next” and we look forward to seeing him and…

Nationals Bulletin #3. Though not as lengthy as the previous bulletins, it has important information that has changed since the publication of the previous bulletins. The bulletin includes a traffic route map and a grounds map, both with all of the buildings labeled that will be used during Nationals. Changes in Bulletin #3 include:

·         Closure of Waukau Avenue which necessitates entering the EAA site via a different route.

·         General parking now to be in the L Lot, adjacent to Gate 31 and not far from Building C (hangar).

The Ben Glattstein Keystone Classic has been cancelled by the organizers. The contest was to have taken place on October 20-21, 2017 at Keystone Heights Airport, Florida. The cancellation is due in part to the hurricane, they were not able to secure enough judges, and in addition they had picked the contest dates because they are during Fall break, however some pilots that are students might have to attend classes during Fall break to make up for missed days during school closing for Hurricane Irma.

I’m sad to report that we have decided to cancel this year’s Apple Turnover Contest. The all-pervasive smoke has created IFR conditions throughout the area (Ephrata AWOS is now reporting 2 miles and 2600 broken), and the many, many fire TFR’s allow almost  no routes to Ephrata from Western Washington, Western Oregon, or California, so even if the smoke were to (miraculously) clear few could get here. Please stay safe and stay home.

We’ll see whether we can have a function in Ephrata later in the year…
