Judges Certification and Currency

Introduction

IAC has rather complex rules for becoming a judge and maintaining currency, documented in P&P 214. Factors include:

  • Contest experience
    • Number of flights judged (chief or line)
    • Number of assists (chief or line)
    • Categories of line judge assists
    • Flights flown (Adv/Unl)
  • Exams passed (written and oral)
  • Schools attended
  • IAC membership status

In past years much of this information was gathered and tallied manually by the Judges Chair, Judges School instructors, examiners, registrars, volunteer coordinators, scorers, judges, and the judge-candidates themselves. Now we use a combination of Bob Buckley's JaSPer scoring software, Doug Lovell's IACCDB contest database, and the IAC web site to automate the process to a much greater extent in order to reduce workload, update status in a more timely fashion, and improve accuracy and consistency.
