Apple Turnover
September 10/11, 2021
Ephrata, WA
Thankfully some of the COVID travel restrictions have been lifted which allowed us to attend the September Apple event. Christian Baxter flew his Extra 330SC to compete in his first Unlimited contest and Mark Cunningham flew his Extra 300L to give Advanced another go. Most of the trip pre-planning involved trying to locate the appropriate COVID-19 test needed to return back to Canada. This was a bit more of a challenge than expected but thankfully we got it squared away.
We arrived on Wednesday evening which allowed us to get four practice flights in the box on Wednesday night and Thursday. The contest organizers implemented a dual unknown format for Unlimited and Advanced and optional for Intermediate.
Day 1 we were to fly the Known and Unknown #1 and Day 2 we were to fly Unknown #2. Unfortunately it didn't turn out that way. Day 1 of the contest brought high overcast and showery conditions which only allowed the majority of pilots to fly their Known sequences but we were unable to get the Unknown #1 flight completed.  In addition to this kink in the program, Mark had a spark plug failure right before his Known flight and was unable to depart for his flight.  Christian was able to get his first Unlimited Known contest flight in and he flew really well getting 2nd.
Friday night at the Best Western had us locked in our hotel rooms walking two unknown sequences. We know how to have a good time! Day 2 was a perfect severe clear day with little wind and mild temperatures. Christian flew both of his unknowns really well getting 2nd in both flights which gave him 2nd overall. Mark flew all three of his flights and took the win in every flight which gave him the overall win in Advanced.

WESTERN CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP

By Jeff Seaborn, IAC 438260

On September 4-5, the Western Canada Aerobatics Championship was held at Rocky Mountain House, Alberta (CYRM). The event has been in “Rocky” on that weekend for many years. This year was the first time in recent memory that we had great weather all weekend. The event was hosted by the newly formed IAC Chapter 137. The event attracted nine pilots from Alberta and two from Manitoba.

Friday, Sept. 3, was registration day and the opportunity to practice in the contest box. With such good weather, the flying was spread over both Saturday and Sunday. Two rounds on Saturday and one round on Sunday. This provided a relaxing pace for the competitors, the judges, and the many people who drove in or flew in to watch the contest.

Saturday night was a real treat for all as air show pilot Kyle Fowler (www.longez.ca) and his family hosted all to a delicious BBQ dinner. The smoked brisket was so good that it was enough to distract the pilots from walking through their Unknown sequence that was given to them earlier in the day. A big thanks to Kyle, his wife Miranda, and his family for such generous hospitality.

Sunday was just as gorgeous as the previous days and the final round was flown. There was a wind out of the west that built through the morning but then faded around noon. The effects of the wind were felt by all.

It’s worth noting that there was less than one percent difference among the top three pilots in Advanced category. There’s already a lot of

interest amongst the Advanced pilots to be selected for the team to represent Canada in the World Advanced Aerobatic Championship held in October 2023 in the Las Vegas area.
