The Kathy Jaffe Challenge has run since 1999 at various places in IAC Chapter 52 territory-- first at Monticello, New York in the Catskill Mountains,  then for many years at the Flying-W in Lumberton, New Jersey; one year at Hammonton in southern New Jersey; lately at South Jersey Regional, also in Lumberton, New Jersey.

For those of you who missed Beaver State this year, we missed you. As usual, the contest was lots of fun with a wide and diverse group of competitors. Our normal cast of characters and some new faces from the local area as well as some old and new faces who traveled to come all combined to make it a great contest.

Starting out in the Sportsman Category, Sean Van Hatten came with his A game in Jim Bourke’s Extreme Decathlon. Beth Stanton came up from Chapter 38 in Northern California. Beth is the President of Chapter 38 and was flying Dave Watson’s Super D. Steven Bennett placed 3rd…

Kokomo, Indiana is between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne; between Chicago, Illinois and Columbus, Ohio; South of Lake Michigan and the Michigan Mitten.  Mid-America IAC Chapter 124 held their contest, the Hoosier Hoedown in Kokomo earlier this month.

If you were at IAC Aerobatics Canada Chapter 3's Upper Canada Open at Tillsonburg, Ontario earlier this month, you saw a Harvard fly Primary, a Bucker win Sportsman, a Javelin fly Intermediate, and a One Design in Advanced. You also saw lots of Pitts Specials, an Extra, a Staudacher, and Citabria.

Flying began just a few minutes ago (at about 12:00 noon here in Slovakia) of Programme 4 -- the 2nd Free Unknown.  Six pilots were flown last night after the 1st Free Unknown was completed. After a 50% cut of the pilots, based on the standings from the combined programmes, a total of 32 pilots will fly the last programme of this year's WAAC.  Low clouds have again plagued the contest site but weather is now above minimums and the flights should move quickly.

The Free Programme at the World Advanced Aerobatic Championships in Slovakia was completed yesterday in mid-afternoon and the results became final at 5:30 pm.

France took the first two places in the Free (Louis Vanel and Thomas Libaud both flying an Extra 330SC) with a South African pilot (Patrick Davidson) winning the Bronze in a Sukhoi SU-26M. 

US Team pilots were placed as follows:

Mark Fullerton, 22nd; Marty Flournoy, 26th; Mark Nowosielski, 32nd; Craig Gifford, 49th; and Matt Lane, 56th. Team USA in currrently in fourth place.

The last Known flight of the World Advanced Aerobatic Championships in Dubnica nad Váhom, Slovakia was completed yesterday evening, the 9th of August.  All 66 pilots completed the sequence and at 9:30 am this morning, Sunday, the results became official after the protest period expired. 

The contest proceeded smoothly throughout the day, though not without interruption.  Before US Team pilot Craig Gifford's flight, an aircraft landed gear up on the grass runway here at the airfield but it wasn't long before a whole crew of men lifted it and moved it off the runway so the contest…

The 2014 Greg Koontz Airshows Aerobatic Instructor Scholarship in memory of Bobby Younkin was presented Friday evening of AirVenture at the IAC annual dinner. Greg Koontz himself was on hand to present the scholarship. This year’s recipient is Micah Reynolds of New Market, TN, who made the trip to receive the scholarship in person. 

Micah manages an auto body shop that he inherited with the passing of his father. He works hard to keep the family business intact and to support his wife and their two children, but has had ambitions all his life to be involved in aerobatics. Micah does…
