Photo Galleries

How to Create a Gallery

  1. Log in using an account that has Editor permissions
  2. On the right-hand sidebar, you'll see the Links for Editors block. Click on the Add Content link.
  3. Click on Gallery. A form entitled Create Gallery will appear.
  4. Put a meaningful title in the Title text box. For photos from the Nationals, we've titled those galleries Nationals - YYYY, where YYYY is the year.
  5. Leave Number of Columns at 4 (works well for both computers & mobile devices)
  6. Set the Number of Rows to 12, for consistency with the other galleries.
  7. If you feel your gallery needs some introduction or explanation, put it in the Description text box.
  8. If you feel your gallery should be viewable by members only, click on the Publishing Options link at the bottom of the form, then check the Premium Content box. (Our default stance is that photo galleries are a good hook for getting people interested in aerobatics, but there could certainly be exceptions.)
  9. Click on the Save button. Your gallery will appear, with no photos in it (yet).
  10. Note the URL of your gallery, e.g. https://www.iac.org/gallery/moose-sightings
  11. Click the Add media link to add photos from your hard drive.
  12. You can select photos one at a time by using the Add Files link, or you can drag and drop them in bulk from the Windows File Manager, Mac Finder, etc. (Note: I've dragged up to 100 files at a time with no problems, but the upload did fail when I attempted to drag 500 files at once.)
  13. Click the Start Upload button.
  14. Repeat steps 10 through 12 as often as you like.
  15. Navigate to the Galleries page.
  16. Click on the Edit link.
  17. Add a line with the name of your new gallery.
  18. Select the entire line using your mouse (click & drag), then click on the link icon in the editor toolbar.
  19. In the URL text box, type just the portion of the URL (see step 10) that starts with /gallery, then click OK.
  20. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save.

I know that's a lot of steps, but it will make sense when you do it!

How it Works

There is a Basic Page named Galleries which contains links to the various photo galleries on the site. We could have used built-in Drupal features to generate such a page automatically, but in doing so we lose the ability to group links together (e.g., Nationals 2010, Nationals 2011, Nationals 2012, etc.)

The galleries themselves are implemented using the Drupal Media Gallery module, which depends on the Media module. Clicking on a thumbnail will expand the corresponding photo to its full size, courtesy of the Colorbox module.

When adding photos to a gallery, you can upload from your local drive but not from a URL.
