Scores for the 2003 Regional Championship Series have been tabulated by Tom Myers, the official scorekeeper for the series.

The Regional Championship Series began in 2002 and continues to grow in participation according to IAC Executive Director Lisa Popp. “In 2003, 80 members participated in the series, up from 60 in 2002.”

To be eligible, a pilot must fly at least three contests during the year (two for the Northwest Region due to unavailability of contest sites). If more than three contests are flown, the highest scores are used to arrive at each…

Jose Louis de Aresti Aguirre, widely known within the aerobatic community and member of the International Aerobatic Club (IAC) Hall of Fame, passed away on November 18 in Madrid, Spain at the age of 84.

Aresti was most widely known for his work in developing the aerocryptographic system, or shorthand, for recording aerobatic maneuvers, more commonly known as the “Sistema Aresti” or Aresti System. His aerobatic figure diagrams allowed internationally competing pilots to communicate, even when they did not speak the same language. The Aresti System is accepted worldwide as the system…

President of CIVA

In November of each year, the International Aerobatics Commission (CIVA) meets to review proposals from national aero clubs and to plan the future of aerobatics worldwide. CIVA is part of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, the world governing body for all air sports. The responsibilities FAI has for governance of air sports is carried out by its various air sports commissions including CIVA.

In an effort to be certain that everyone involved has a full and complete understanding of the IAC Board of Directors’ action in this motion, and it’s rationale, the IAC would like to clarify motion 34. The motion states, “It is moved that the restriction in the P&P be changed to say that they [Advanced Team Candidates] can fly any legal airplane at the U.S. Nationals.” This motion was made by Phil Knight and seconded by Bubba Vidrine. The defending International Aerobatic Club (IAC) Collegiate National Champion Southern Illinois University Aerobatic Team received team and individual trophies at a luncheon held in its honor at EAA headquarters in Oshkosh on January 20. With a combined score of 84.64 percent, SIU earned the 2002 title, edging out Embry Riddle Aeronautical University-Prescott and ERAU-Daytona (82.27).

The Best U.S. Aerobatic Pilots to Compete for National Championship
More than 100 of the nation’s most highly-skilled aerobatic pilots will contend in head-to-head competition for the U.S. National Aerobatic Championship title at the Grayson County Airport in Denison, TX, this month. The Championships will be held September 21-28 in Denison, which is one hour north of the Dallas metro area, and are organized by the International Aerobatic Club (IAC), the governing body for aerobatics in the United States.

IAC and FAA officials will release a new video on July 26, Thursday, 1 p.m., titled, "How To Avoid Aircraft Upsets." IAC Vice President Dave Monroe and a representative of the FAA to be announced will be on hand to introduce the video, the second such collaboration between IAC, EAA, NAFI and FAA. The first video, "Avoiding the Inadvertent Spin," was introduced at last year’s AirVenture.

The video will be shown between 1 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. at the eBay Pavilon (former AOL Pavilion).

In an IAC Board of Directors teleconference on Saturday, June 29, 2002, Gerry Molidor was unanimously elected as IAC President to fill the vacant position left by Rob Dorsey. Mike Maloney was appointed to fill the vacant Board of Directors position left by Gerry.
