CP Aviation, Inc. Awards Emergency Maneuver Training Scholarship

CP Aviation, Inc. has awarded an Emergency Maneuver Training (EMT) scholarship at CP Aviation, Inc. to an aspiring young pilot, Kelsey Lomen, 18 years old, of Eagle Rock, CA.

The flight school, based in Santa Paula, is known throughout the world for their specialized training curriculum, originally developed in 1987. CP Aviation is the home of two Master CFI-Aerobatics, who have also been awarded National CFI of the Year by the FAA, Rich Stowell (2006), and Judy Phelps (2011).

The scholarship, now in its fourth year, is awarded each summer to a recipient who is a member of the IAC, holds a private pilot’s certificate, and wishes to pursue unusual attitude and basic aerobatic training. The scholarship is offered in memory of Santa Paula aerobatic champion Vicki Cruse, a member of the United States Unlimited Aerobatic Team and was President of the IAC.

Lomen has pursued aviation with enthusiasm. “When I was 15 years old, my mom found an article about the Young Eagles program – which offers kids an introductory flight in a small aircraft, at Whiteman Airport. I decided to go, and on a sunny Saturday morning, took my very first flight in a general aviation airplane. After that, I was hooked,” says Lomen, who went on to complete her private pilot certificate at the age of 17, in 2010.

In addition, she joined the local Aviation Explorers club, a youth development program focusing on aviation education, becoming president of the local post. She participates as a volunteer in many aviation events.

“I’ve had the opportunity to fly all over California, as well as across the country to Oshkosh, WI” Lomen said.

After earning a private pilot certificate, she enrolled in CP Aviation’s Emergency Maneuver Training program, and applied for the EMT scholarship.

The training is conducted in Citabria and Decathlon airplanes. The emphasis of the course is on creating safer pilots. The program is broken down into three modules: Stall Spin Awareness, In Flight Emergencies, and Basic Aerobatics.

Lomen is excited to complete her Emergency Maneuver Training. “I am so eager to continue my Emergency Maneuver Training,” says Lomen, “I’m sure that it will result in my being a substantially better and safer pilot.”
