WELCOME TO REDLANDS

Join Chapter 26 Labor Day weekend in sunny Southern California for the inaugural Redlands Aerobatic Cup!

Chapter 26 is mounting a new contest at Redlands (KREI) on the eastern edge of the LA Basin, 60 miles northeast of Los Angeles and 45 miles west of Palm Springs. Tucked up against the pictureque San Bernardino Mountains, Redlands has long been a base of aerobatic operations and the airport management are excited to host what we hope will be an annual event. The town itself has hiking and biking trails, an array of quaint shops, historic architecture, and a variety of local restaurants, so there are things to entertain family if they would like to join their pilots. Redlands is also 60 miles from Disneyland and other theme parks.

SCHEDULE

The contest will follow our traditional Happiness is Delano Labor Day schedule:

  • Friday, Sept. 3 - Registration & Practice starting at 9:00am
  • Saturday, Sept. 4 - Briefing at airport 7:00am, Contest flights 8:00am
  • Sunday, Sept. 5 - Briefing at airport 7:00am, Continue contest flights 8:00am, Awards ~ 6:00pm

AIRPORT INFO:

Note that the REI traffic pattern will be changed to facilitate the box located directly north of the field, so use south traffic for both 08/26 if arriving Friday. This info will be broadcast with the weather at the airport, and will also have a volunteer montioring CTAF for wayward pilots who don't read their NOTAMS. Due to the pattern change, practice is only on Friday, no earlier.

The airport itself is small but lovely. There is a spacious lobby with lots of seating options, and a large covered patio that looks directly north at the box. Contest aircraft will be parked out front, with overflow nearby. Two self-serve fuel pumps are immediately west of the terminal, which makes pushing planes around easier. And, drumroll, the judges line will be located on the airport itself – no ferrying to/from as it is a quick walk.

LOCAL INFO:

Hangar 24 is across the street from the airport and will have food vendors arriving at 11:30 each day, all with vegetarian options. We will be holding an "Awards Happy Hour" there on Sunday evening.

The contest hotel is the Ayres Hotel Redlands, which has generously provided a 20% discount on both single and double rooms. The room block IS limited and ENDS AUGUST 14, so do book in advance. Group code is 1367 (call them at 909-335-9024) and takes effect Thursday if you need to arrive a day early.

We will try to arrange car shuttles from the hotel, but Uber and Lyft are also readily availble as Redlands is in the populated LA Basin. Rentals cars should also be available from local agencies – the FBO doesn't provide this servce.

Registration for pilots and volunteers is open at our chapter website.

We dedicate this first contest to the endangered species located in the flood plain where the box markers need to be placed, which have caused much ado: the adorable San Bernardino Kangaroo Rat, the gorgeous blue Santa Ana River Woolly Star and the tiny San Bernardino Spineflower. We will protect your habitat with our new "floating" box markers.
